Ingress

Is It Time To Move?

The wonderful people at Google have had ingress in the pipeline for a while now and I've only recently given it any real thought. After seeing the new live action trailer for it (above) I am well and truly sold.

What is ingress?

Ingress is a game. An augmented Reality (AR) game. One of the first of its kind. The plot is pretty much you take one of two sides and "hack portals" it runs of a Google Maps like user interface and it uses the GPS on your mobile device to track your movements, it will show you on a map where the portals are and how to get to them. You compete against the other team to hack the most portals and cover the game area.....which happens to be the entire planet. yes you read that correctly. the entire planet.

Potential Issues

This idea is great don't get me wrong however what if you live in the middle of nowhere? lets face it. its not going to be fantastic. You'll need to live in a decent sized town or city to really make the most of this. As Awesome as this may be it is as we all know deep down, just a big part of Google's master plan to collect more and more detailed location data from their mobile users. if they start setting up "portals" in malls / public places then they'll be able to cover so much more space with maps and be able to start covering small side walks / alleyways / malls / stations....you get the idea.

Potential Developments

This absolutely must have something to with the build up to the official release of Project Glass. Project Glass is basically Google Glasses, a pair of glasses that are Augmented reality and sport a HUD that can run Android. yes. glasses that can run Android ICS.
